Do Not Cry Over Spilled Milk, Backup Your Data Now Before It Is Too Late!
By Hirvesh Marshall of Codefusion Lab
Many persons have kicked themselves for not backing up their data before something unfortunate happened to it. You may think that computers are safe and will forever take care of your data, but that is a very bad idea. It is not uncommon to see computer hard disk crash and all data gets lost, with no affordable means to recover it. What I mean by affordable is that YOU the home computer or office computer user might not be able to pay a professional service to recover the data, while huge multinationals can. Therefore it will be wise to backup your data now. Now, let's speak of how can your data actually get lost before talking about the solutions to this problem. A computer, although very reliable in calculations, might not be that safe for us to confide important data to it. You might never know when disaster might occur. You data on a computer might get lost by the following ways: * Hard Disk Crash - The hard disk of your computer malfunctions, short-circuits, get a violent shock or has a general failure and crashes. * Disasters like fire, floods, power surges (although you might be protected with a UPS) and more. * Hackers causing trouble, destroys data. * Accidental overwriting of data. * Stolen storage medium. * Updated with incorrect data. * Data altered by unauthorized persons. * More causes A typical hard disk has a mean time of 20 000 to 200 000 hours between two successive failures. This means that, if you are using your computer computer 12 hours a day and 5 days weekly that during the whole year, you can expect your hard disk to break down about one time every six year, BUT if you take in account of all the other components which might suffer break down during the computer's operation time, you can expect your computer to break down every 14 months! This time might be significantly reduced if your computer is not serviced and well maintained! However, if you are still not heeding the advice of backing up your data, here is a fact: IBM estimates that 70% of the companies which have suffered a computer failure caused by any of the above mentioned ways have gone out of operation WITHIN 18 MONTHS! This not only affects your business but causes loss of customers, credibility, cash flow interruption, loss of production, decreased productivity and more. If you want to escape all these horrors of data loss, backup your data now. However, it is not sensible to backup your data once only. Your need to schedule regular backups. Even when you have made regular backups, you are not safe. You need to move your backups to a safe location. If your computer is stolen, the thief might take the backup disks as well. If a fire, flood break out, your backups might be destroyed. You need to store your backup in a safe remote location or invest in a flood and fire proof safe. If you cannot afford these, backup your files to an online backup service, or keep your files in an online hard disk.

One of the problems encountered these days is not being able to reasonably back up ones data, after all the problem got alot worse when hard drives got alot larger. I use a number of paired 1Tb (terabyte) drives, but had the sense to mirror the stored data using RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks). Not a perfect means of backup but much less vulnerable to losing valuable data if one drive/s were to fail.
