Archiving Files On Your Computer Saves You In Space!
By Hirvesh Marshall of Codefusion Lab
Many persons when storing files, which they will rarely be using, on their computer do not compress it. What are the advantages and disadvantages of compressing data to store on the hard disk. Let me say it right now: the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The first advantage of compressing data is that you save massive about of disk space if you are doing this on quite a large scale. There are different compression formats available on the Internet. Most of them provide decent compression ratios. However, there are those exceptional algorithms which allow you to compress your files that extra percent. On a large scale, this extra compression saves you quite a handsome amount of space. The second advantage of compressing your files is that you get only one output (compressed) file. This enable easy manipulation of the file. You can easily email it, encrypt it, split it to put it on several disks. There are many other advantages, but now let's see a couple of the disadvantages. It takes time to decompress the compressed file to view its content, especially if it is a large one. If you have sent the compressed file to someone by email, your recipient needs the same software, or a compatible one to decompress it. However, the last disadvantage I mentioned has now become obsolete since Windows already has built-in support for compressed files as from Windows XP. Anyway, if you want to save disk space, compress the files on your computer and use the the archiver's explorer to navigate and search within the compressed files.
